Alfie Mawson ‘locks’ knee in warm-up but Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal plays down ‘big problem’

Alfie Mawson “locked” his knee in the warm-up before Swansea’s draw against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup but boss Carlos Carvalhal does not believe it is a “big problem”.

Centre-back Mawson was pictured in a leg-brace watching the fifth-round 0-0 draw at Hillsborough on Saturday and Carvahal admitted the player has locked the right knee-joint before the game.

The injury caused added disappointment for Mawson, with England boss Gareth Southgate in the stands ahead of this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

“I talked to the doctor; he has locked his knee in the past and it happened again today,” said Portuguese head coach Carvalhal.

“Before it had stabilised and he had played and trained. This time it happened and it stayed locked.

“I spoke to him after the game. He says it feels much better, I don’t think it is a big problem but let’s see if there is a big problem or not a problem. The next two days will tell us more.”

“I don’t like to interfere in the work of my colleagues, but they (the England staff) must look at him because he is a top centre-half.”

Swansea travel to Brighton next in the Premier League on Saturday, sitting 16th in the table and only a point outside the relegation places.
